Because it mostly keeps guys from losing money in the tough/ down years. 2012 into 2013 land prices were still setting new records around here. Most of the corn was disked under in 12 but guys still made good money because of insurance, without insurance it could have been a 1983 style drought/fall off. 2019 was similar with all the prevent plant, without those payments would land prices soared just a year later when grain prices took off? I don’t think so, because guys would have to save and be conservative for the tough times and probably take 2 or 3 years to make back the money they lost in that 1 bad year. There is no longer much need for a rainy day fund it’s just bid it to the moon because insurnance and .gov will bail us out (mfp anyone?).
