Pittsburg, Kansas | A little fructose is fine. Like many say "moderation in everything".
But how much is moderation????? How much fructose did people consume 100 years ago. 200 years ago. 500 years ago???? I would posit a very, very small amount except for maybe seasonal.
Sugar is 50% fructose (50% glucose). High fructose corn syrup is slightly higher in fructose but essentially the same as sugar. Fruit has fructose but an apple or orange once in a while as a treat only a very modest amount. But drink 10 oranges worth of fruit juice like orange or apple juice? No problem, even for a child. Juices are loaded with fructose with no fiber to slow down its absorption. But I digress.
I wanted to post this very short video of fructose metabolism. Less than 5 minutes long. If moderation is good, excess has the potential to be bad. I would say that modern society is drinking and eating a way more fructose than the body is designed to handle with ease. It does handle it in a manner, but in my opinion not in a manner that is good for our long term health.
