Some people seem to be missing your point that not everyone had physically demanding lifestyles back then. Although I do think it took more physical activity just for daily living even if you had a desk job. To me most of it is the availability of really bad for you processed food 24/7. Gas stations, convenience stores, even the deep freeze with the microwave not far away make it entirely too easy for people to satisfy an imagined hunger or craving with absolute garbage chock full of fat, sodium, triglycerides, corn syrup, sugar and any other manner of things that contribute to obesity. Back in 1950 snacking between meals was the exception rather than the rule. Food was generally homemade without all of the crap that goes into processed food. Most households didn’t have a freezer or if they did there wasn’t a half gallon of ice cream in it at all times. Ice cream was homemade on special occasions a few times a year.
