I think It must be the volume of food people eat these days. People here keep missing the fact that even city people working office jobs weren't typically overweight back then.

We do live a more sedentary lifestyle still compared to the 50s I'd say.. But eating the meat and potatoes and pie in moderate amounts probably just didn't have the calories to gain excess weight. Fast food wasn't a normal thing like now a days. As more women moved from being homemakers/stay home mothers into the workforce it's easier to eat out every week once or more times.
