Useless in your situation, but I used a road grader to very carefully expose the full depth of one side of a really rotten 1/2 mile stretch then roll it out.
Then used a grapple bucket to bunch it up, shake out dirt, and drop it in a trailer.
Went unbelievably good. But, there was only one tree in the whole deal.
