East of Broken Bow | Knew an old retired State Trooper, was friends with him until he passed away. I remember him lamenting some of the new safety features.
Said that in his experience, anti-lock brakes and traction control didn't reduce the number of accidents around 'here' much. Said the first slick day there were usually a couple small fender benders because people knew it was slick, even if it didn't look very slick. He said with the new safety features, you are far more likely to come upon a multi car crash, or someone 100 feet off the road in a field, because the driver had no idea the road was getting slick until they were going sideways into the ditch at 50 MPH.
I also wonder if people don't get overconfident in their driving with all the 'safety' built into new cars, and then drive too fast for the conditions. We have friends visit in the spring from Atlanta, and they comment that if there is a half inch of snow on the road, they news is full of car crashes from the slick conditions, and he commented that around here, a foot of snow just means you leave for town a bit sooner. | |
