Midwest | Years ago I worked for a guy in a similar situation, except he had an overabundance of marginal grass hay.
When it snowed or got really cold (or both) we would spread out several round bales of this marginal hay. His attitude was that they could eat what they want, and lay on the rest.
This was while the cows were still out on stalks, so what was left of the hay was just tilled under come spring. We never bedded in the same spot twice, we had plenty of treeline available for a windbreak and would pick a different spot along the treeline. | |
