Who said anything about low populations? Most people trying 60s plant the same population per acre as in 30s (so, plants half as far apart).
We plant 28,000 - 30,000 in 30s here, but in 60s I'd shoot for 45,000 - 50,000 with a high flex hybrid, not 60,000 plants. I think you need soil with a more resilient moisture profile to push the population too far.
