Subject: RE: 60" rows and ear corn

Northeast Missouri
A lot of people misunderstood...I was only using "100 acres" for cost comparison purposes...yes, that would be a lot of ear corn to handle. 100 acres * 150 bu. = 15000 bu. * 2.4 cubic ft. per bushel = 36,000 cubic feet. If a guy had an 8' wide crib, 15' high...it would take a 300-ft. long crib to hold that much ear corn!

My ear corn harvest & storage in the past have also been small scale.

My favorite of setups I've seen is a narrow crib with a sloping floor, with a concrete apron in front. With wide openings, the corn flows out the openings onto the apron where it can be picked up with a skid loader...and dumped into a gravity wagon to grind out of.

I think Garvo still has a crib like that, to sell....but it'd be almost impossible to haul any distance without cutting it into chunks. Too bad; otherwise I'd buy it!
