As has already been mentioned the clutch may not have needed replacing. If the clutch itself went out the tractor wouldn't move or at least it wouldn't in a high gear. When you first used it after setting the clutch maybe rusted somewhat to the flywheel. If so could have sprung some linkage or fingers on the pressure plate when you pushed the pedal. Rust deposits in the clutch could have created enough drag to spin the transmission with no load. Did the tractor stop moving when you pushed the clutch in after starting it in gear? Either way I wouldn't go after the seller. Also I'm not faulting the fixer/repair guy because if it had to be split to find out what was wrong it would be wise to replace anything questionable while there. What you found when it was split should give some insight as to what caused the problem.
