It's odd it didn't act that way when you test drove it. In any case I think with 30 and 40 year old equipment the seller could have legitimately not known anything was wrong with it. I'm sure all of us have pulled out into the field with our own equipment we thought was ready to go only to have it break down completely unexpectedly.

Around here if you're buying used equipment you're on your own, especially if there is no warranty discussion. As said above, if you want something like new spend 10 times as much as buy it. Fix it, forget it, move on. Next time have a mechanic look it over before buying it.
