Calibration could be off Rich. 1/2 point is annoying, however the hand sampled probe is likely the "best" sample. I have noticed moisture differences in probe styles. A probe with a single opening on the bottom seems to suck the lighter wet kernels into the probe vs. the heavier dryer kernels. Probes that "open" up throughout the entire profile (about a 3-4 ft)on one side seem to give the most accurate moisture readings (in my opinion).

I will take into consideration these differences before marketing grain with these folks. A couple hundred thousand bushels of corn at 1.5 % shrink and 5.75 cents per point drying makes a nice bonus for me at the end of the year at only 1 point difference.

There is really no standard as to what an elevator is required to use as a probe. However I have noticed that FGIS (Federal grain inspection service) seems to use probes that open up on the side for the entire profile. Moisture testers do have to be state certified in Iowa.
