It made a Crop | Do you have the Yetter Spike wheel already? If not consider the Shark Tooth wheels. I tried a pair last year and they do cut a move the residue. You just got to handle them with "Kevlar" gloves. They live up the there name.
As for your question. I only run them to move the clumps of residue out of the way. Most of my clumps are cause by water move the residue. But if you have heavy residue to move you might need to move a little soil to get the job done. It'll just make the plant pull harder. With are varying soils I rarely find a setting that works across the whole field.
I've seen where Dawn and Yetter and most likely others are making units that can be adjusted from the tractor seat.
