Brazilton KS
The leading disc is sharp and it cuts through residue quite nicely on firm ground.  We plant lots of soybeans into corn stalks with no attachments on the Early Risers.    The only exception is planting into wheat straw in the mud, where the ground is not hard enough to allow the blades to cut the straw without pushing it into the ground.  This mostly shows up in the combine tire tracks.
