Subject: RE: Machinery, labour costs, and SMALL farms...

Funny you should mention this.

I recently sent an email to another member of this community wondering how some of the smaller farms can 'make it' with their machinery costs PER ACRE.

Put me somewhere in the middle. I run some old equipment, some new equipment. Each machine has to pencil out that it pays for itself. DOWNTIME is a major factor--potential downtime from an old machine has a cost. Most older machines I run have a backup (another old machine). Back-up ratio is according to reliability....... example...... one old backup tractor is needed for X number of older tractors being run.

In the wrong conditions, downtime HAS cost me $3,000.00 per hour.
