Much depends on your location & abilities. If you can quickly get parts, have the on farm skills and time to do the maintence on older equipemtent, that is the way to go.
One of our largest growers here does not run anything newer than 20 years old. More than half his help is semi retired skilled people looking for something to do. He always has one dependable and knowledgeable full time individual on the payroll.

There are also a very few farmers who have nothing working that is not still in warranty.

Both approaches appear to be profitable.
