South Central Kansas | The members of the KCIA that sell seed set their own prices. The organization as an entity cannot lawfully even discuss pricing. I have been at meetings where a question about prices was brought up. The executive director immediately said that it was a violation of the law (collusion) to even discuss prices, let alone set them.
Seed growers can and do visit with other seed growers and compare pricing. I have other growers call me every year and ask what I am charging for certified seed wheat. I usually tell them I haven't set prices yet, but when the word gets out, they always undercut me.
My answer for farmers who call and say a seed grower down the road has cheaper prices is, "Well, they know what their stuff is worth". End of conversation. | |
