NE CO | I think it is important to respect the PVP act which recognizes the importance of protecting the developers of the wheat varieties. Wheat varieties are still in large part developed by public institutions (Land Grant Colleges). If they don't recognize some financial gain from their progress, we will either be without improved varieties or captive to the "Monsantos" of the world, neither of which are desirable outcomes.
Actually we even had the president of the Colo Wheat Growers selling bin run seed of protected varieties 10-15 years or so ago. I think he got off with a slap on the wrist. Thank god he isn't farming anymore. | |
