Do not ride the brakes. That is a no no.

Every truck we ever bought used to put a feed box on needed new lower gears in the rear end. Either 5.23 or 6.1? Truck people would have a chart that will put in the transmission, rear end, and engine rpm to tell you how fast you will go in each gear.

I know for my manure trucks I need a 9, 10, or 13 speed with a 5.23 rear end to spread at 4 mph. Hard to find. An old cement truck with an 8LL transmission will do this all day long not even in the lowest gear. Plus they come with 20,000 front axles and 46,000 walking beam rear axles for pretty low cost.

Slower rear ends may be hard to find. Multiple passes may be the easiest option. I have not had a truck in almost 8 years so not sure how many passes, but I know on the last allison we rented it took 3 passes to feed what our slowed down truck would do in 1.5
