I know a guy that had to quit dairy because his cows wouldn't adapt to a free stall parlor system, too. So yeah, there's risk no matter what you do, not every technology works for every operation. Apparently they work for some operations so they can't be all bad. Dairy is like every other business today, you have to scale up to make a living and in order to do that you have to reduce your labor time and cost. Many guys have gone to more automated parlor systems and hired labor and that seems to be working for them, thats one way of using technology to reduce labor. Some of the 40-50 cow dairies around here use a more automated style of milker(not robotic) so they can use hired labor to help with milking, others just use the regular pipeline systems but limit who they will allow to do the milking. There are lots of ways of milking cows, it just depends on how hard and how many hours you want to put in to do it.
