Southern IA
The data says it has been a positive net return for the past 10 years with a big hiccup in 2009. Problem is all those cows and equipment are constantly depreciating and needing updated and the market doesn't seem to care about COP or the labor and capital requirements to run a dairy. I think if I was wanting to cash out of crops and beef to get into dairy, I'd be looking in the yellow pages for a psychiatrist to visit as I'd likely be going crazy. Unfortunately it looks like the net return on a beef cow is going to be higher than the net on a dairy cow this year unless milk gets in tune with the rest of the ag markets.
