SW Ontario | If you are operating on mostly open areas, I would not recommend a zero turn for somebody who might not like something 'different'. If mom is doing the cutting, i would get a traditional steer machine...3 cuts a year, you aren't looking to cut off a couple of seconds per round.
I agree with a used 455, can probably find one fairly cheap and they are tough and dependable. We have one with 3500 hours and it has needed very little...couple of hydraulic hoses, some lifting linkage, one fan belt, rebuilt starter and alt., deck belts every couple of years, and blades...that's it.
BTW, if you look, and get lucky, you might find a all wheel steer 455. The AWS models will cut a 8' cirlcle, so there is even less of an advantage to a zero turn.
It is also hard to have a beverage with you with a 0 turn.
