When you are trying to synch engine RPMs (using the throttle) with the gear you are trying to find, you must have the clutch engaged (not pushed in). Basically, what you are actually doing is matching the RPMs of the flywheel/front half the transmission with the back half of the transmission through your gear ratio. If you disengage (push in) the clutch while you are reving the engine, you are only changing the engine/flywheel rpms, not the front part of the transmission. With the clutch disengaged (pushed in), and the transmission in nuetral, the front part (input end)of the transmission will coast to a stop (no matter what your engine RPMS or ground speed). As long as you still have forward ground travel, the drive wheels turn the drive shaft which turns the back half (output end) of the tranmission. You use the engine RPMs with the clutch engaged (let out) to synchronize the front half of the transmission with the back half through the gear ratio required. Clear as mud?
If you are down shifting on a straight flat stretch, where you won't loose much ground speed as you shift, you will need to rev the engine 300-500 rpms (depends on the truck) then feel your way into the lower gear. I find that sometimes it helps to nudge the clutch a little as you put it in the lower gear.
If you are down shifting before a turn or corner and loosing most of your forward ground speed, you may find that by the time you get ready to engage the lower gear you do not need to rev the engine. You will just find a gear that the shifter will fall into, at about 1000-1200 rpms, where you will be ready to accelerate through your turn or corner.
