Subject: Re: Oilfield Drilling Questions

Southeastern Alberta
Surface casing is to both protect the groundwater and to protect the well from blowing out. A cemented surface casing keeps drilling fluid from entering into the groundwater, but more importantly I think keeps perched aquifers from draining into lower areas, and keeps surface water from contaminating groundwater.

Honestly, I think that poorly constructed water wells can be more detrimental to ground water than the majority of oil and gas operations. No oil and gas company is going to drill a well without a surface casing because of the possibility of blowout equalling death and a burning rig. A fly by night water well company however possibly won't use bentonite to seal the groundwater from the surface.
