| In the earlier days of the oilfield, a driller could crank the pipe at an angle and get to pools that were not leased to them. This was called whipstocking. That is why setbacks were established. If a well is drilled within some many feet of a property line, the neighboring landowner get part of the land owner share. I have heard stories from the old timers of drillers that could do amazing things with 5000 foot of drill stem. The big issue was collapsing the hole, and stuck pipe.
These were the good ole' days. Now they can horizontal drill with 3d sismograph and do amazing things. | |
