Up here in NW North Dakota the have been drilling vertical to about 8500 ft and then kicking off and drilling about another 10,000 ft horizontally so the total depth is around 18,000 ft. give or take. Up here they are required to use fresh water to drill I think 2500 ft. run casing and cement it off so no ground water problems. After that they use there own mud recipe. They are drilling the the Bakken and Three Forks formations and hitting some big wells up here. After the well is completed the state keeps a close eye on them watching for spills problems etc.
