Would it not be the best of both worlds to band the fully recommended rate of fertilizer. that way the plant would not have to such as hard for all the nutrients. Plus as long as the residue is left and only grain removed the residue should eventually "spread" the fertilizer.

Right ? I don't even pretend to have all the right answers even for my little spot in "heaven" let a lone everybody else's. We mostly apply manure from local feedlots for everything except N and we used to do that with coop floating it on with herbicide. This year will put N down with the planter to get it through the residue and so the plant can find it easier
