The sticker is moisture. Without the cooperation of Mother Nature, you can pour all the money you can into an acre and still not produce a crop let alone one that gives you an economic return.

Each soil type has a different capability of producing a crop. If one's soil types don't vary much within the field, then a blanket type application makes economic sense. If they vary greatly with significant varying soil types within the field, then VRT may have a benefit. If you are irrigating, the above is almost a moot point, as the possibilities on what can be done increase dramatically.

For years and years the bench mark has been yield yield yield. Always a neighbor that has had higher yield and that is what one strived to achieve for improvement. How truthful that "yield" is/was is open to debate. Sometimes it's a truthful report, sometimes it's stretched just a tad, but none the less, it provided a bench mark to shoot for.

In today's world tho, IMO, one should be striving to achieve the greatest economic return possible from a particular soil type in a particular area in a particular year. Crop production is an ever changing revolving science with new data and procedures tosses out daily. It's a new era and in order to compete with our competition (neighbors), to be on the top of the game, we have to have an open mind, crunch the numbers, take risks (calculated) and attempt to move forward.

IMO, today, those that want to sustain will do the above, those that wish to remain "status quo" because that is what history has said is the "way", will be weeded out of the fold.

I'm not referring anyone posting previously is in one camp or the other, not at all. All I'm suggesting is to open the mind a bit further, loosen the blinders up a bit (we are all wearing them to some degree in some areas of our operation, myself included) and take a step into the "unknown". None of us have to defend what we to do to anyone on this or any other board, we only have to justify our actions to our life partner, our Maker, and in many situations our banker, and above all else.... ourselves.

In many situations the biggest obstacle of moving forward is our own resistance to do so.
