Do you have realtime data to back this up? I don't put much faith in the university system as they are being sponsered by large fertilizer corps. and chemical companies.
I have used a practice like this for some time now and can never measure consistantly the removal that the fertilizer industry preach. High fertilizer prices are going to increase this form of crop feeding long term. As a former "fertilizer guy" is sounds like your response is tuned to keeping the tons up rather than the best economic return to the farmer. I just spent some time with my local sales rep and he started saying the same thing.
