Dan, I have put in many many driveways in the past few years. That is exactly what I do.
In fact we were making a drive for a fellow a few years ago from his cow manure pit to the lane, started with rip-rap 12" deep and finished it with twos. He thought I was nuts.
But it hasn't moved an inch in three years with an assload of manure hauled on it.
