Faunsdale, AL | Just to emphasize, it is very unusual to make dry hay without getting it rained on. It also deteriorates rapidly if rained on (lots of stalk sugars). But cows will still love the stuff.
Tonnage will be higher if you cut it taller, but quality and drying is better when cut earlier. It can be really hard to cut with a disc mower when it's so immature, can just mush up and not feed through conditioners.
Silage is best. Probably go for one cut.
Or graze it out. Just watch out for frosted/recently frozen fields. It makes a cyanide compound which persists until it's completely dried down. Making it into silage is not a problem, just grazing it after freezing. The ensiling process helps on nitrate as well, probably about 50% reduction.
