nw oh | Here is the crazy idea I have come up with during many hours of hauling and piling manure. I want to try and large square bale sorghum sudangrass that is planted after wheat harvest.
We feed straw as a roughage source to calf fed holsteins (wet cake and shelled corn remainder of ration). I am looking for another roughage source with a little more feed value, namely energy. At this location I do not have storage for silage, so a dry hay source works the best.
A larger feeder close to me plants a lot of sorghum sudan behind wheat and chops it. They claim it has similar energy value to corn silage. Would I see same results if baled. I would probably have to mow it earlier than if making silage.
I am hoping to plant it second week of July and maybe bale the 3rd or 4th week of August. This is in Northern Ohio.
Any suggestions would be great. I would like to try on a small 14 acre patch and if it works increase the acres.
Thank you in advance. | |
