Subject: Re: robotic milkers

With the treated animals we do it both ways. We do have sort gates that will sort the treated cow after it is milked, but you dont know when she is going to go through, so that doesn't always work so well. We usually just walk out in the pen and get her.

We do treat in a regular chute, but when we built the treatment area, we put a pit next to the chute that is the same depth as a milking parlor, so if we have a cow with mastitis it works pretty well.

We do not have a regular milking unit, we haven't had a cow yet that didn't work in the robot. We have culled two cows that we thought may be a problem on the next lactation, but we would have culled them if we were in the parlor too. We have been surprised how well the robots attach to some ugly cows. We had a couple of cows that we were prepared to ship when we made the transition, just assuming the robots wouldn't be able to attach, but they are going to be coming back for another lactation.

The worst cows are the ones that like to kick or wont stand still, but we hated them in the parlor too.
