Subject: Re: robotic milkers

Manitoba, Canada
How do you deal with animals that have to be treated? What I mean is do you have sorting gates and set the computer to sort out the cows that need to be dealt with so they are locked up in a seperate pen when you get to the barn or do you have to seperate them from the herd yourself? Also, do you treat animals in a regular cattle chute or something else? Is it raised? I would sure miss the elevated udders for treating mastitis otherwise. Do you still have/need a regular milking unit for some problems or do you just cull problems that the robot can't handle? That rumination thing sounds like a very good tool to have! I suspect one of the biggest differences from a farmers point of view is the time spent in the barn is more to do with managing and caring for animals rather than repetitive milking routines. Glad your happy with it, it is a very big decision to make and takes some guts to make the change!
