Clear Lake, Iowa | These things don't just happen---you should have seen it coming--owner getting older, heirs would (at least possibly) sell. Since you had of-farm jobs to live on, if you ever pulled one penny out of the farming operation for living, unnecessary extras, etc, rather than saving every cent of this up for when this happened (or to buy something else that might/may have popped up), then you didn't want it bad enough. There's nearly always someone who wants it more and will sacrifice more, and they are the ones who make their dreams happen.
If I'm making too many assumptions from the limited info you provided, then I sincerely apologize.
The fact remains that this was inevitable and some preparations should have been made. Maybe save for a down payment on at least some of it, have an investor waiting in the wings... something. It's most likely too late now.
