| I worked about 10 years total between an ethanol plant and hog barn. These were pretty much consistent hours a week (I was in management and had to devote more time occasionally for shutdowns/outages and periods of short staffing.) Dad was wanting to slow down eyeing retirement and we were growing our family so burning the candle at both ends was reaching the limit. It helped me get ramped up financially in my late 20's and 30's.
I would recommend a job that you don't have to put in a lot of hours in spring and fall (crop consultant or working in Agronomy at a coop). I know folks do this and all depends on how much time the farm takes to complete the work in spring and fall and also figure in extra for rain delays and such. Good luck, it can be done, much easier when you are young and have more drive.
Don't know if you have livestock too, I did it with row crops and cow calf pairs and luckily my dad could help during calving or if one got out while I was at work. | |
