SC Kansas
We moved into my grandparents farmhouse which was built in 1915 when we got married 20 years ago. After having our 2 kids, we had the cellar dug out and a new basement poured. It added 2 large bedrooms, a smaller bedroom, a nice master bathroom, and a family room. It added about 1200 sq ft of living space. It was the footprint of the existing house so all we had to do essentially decide where we wanted our walls. The larger rooms down there are great (20x20 ish) and will be both kids rooms soon, we'll move back upstairs.

Especially if the house will stay in the family, I wouldn't have any problem going bigger. Being able to get together with family doesn't have a price tag unless you don't get along with them.
