First thing to get is lots of RAM, 16GB is a minimum and 32 would be better if you run with lots of windows open. SSD hard drive should be at least 1TB, larger or a second drive if you do any photo or video work. You don't need the latest/fastest processor unless you are doing heavy duty video or gaming with the computer.

As far as the operating system you are pretty limited to Windows 10/11 if you are doing any business related software. I know some say that Apple is OK for business, you can run Word and Excel on Mac but most any other software only runs on Windows. Where I work Windows is required for any proprietary software, will not run under any other OS.

Mint linux work fine for me at home for web use and is pretty much virus proof. It is such a small market that no one is targeting it. Still have to worry about phishing but not much else. Web applications work fine for the most part and LibreOffice fills in OK but I have trouble with Macros written for Excel.
