I can tell you that the consistency of depth and emergence is significantly better with hydraulic down force. We have two planters, one with, and one without. We will likely have hydraulic on the next one.
The air systems are too slow to adjust to changing conditions. Just as well have mechanical springs. The hydraulics can change instantly. This may not be as great an advantage if you always have perfect seedbed preparation, with little variation, and never do any no-till. That is not the situation most folks find themselves in.
You can bad-mouth no-till, or min-till, and say it is lazy not to have a perfect seedbed. If we can get excellent stands without spending the time and money to make umpteen tillage trips across the fields, then I say that's smart, not lazy. | |
