have you tried the in furrow press wheel to press the seed to the bottom of the trench? that has kept me in the moisture pretty well whenever things start getting dry. in the past i have tried the rubber press wheel with the small disks on either side of the trench for closing---i suppose this is what youre calling the cotton setup?? that didnt work to well for me at all in no-till situations and i switched to V closing on the back with Schagel closing wheels and it works great. by the way my set up is a 1710 with the heavy duty adjustable down pressure as well.
