For 30 years the pointy hat people at the land grant schools have been preaching "it is more profitable to rent than to own" without considering the staying power of your operation in tough years if you have some land equity behind you or just a rental contract. Land becomes a better asset as you pay off the mortgage while you keep paying more to maintain your acre base if you are renting. I have also felt that crop insurance helped to lower returns because when you have something guaranteed, there is less profit in it over time. We would have a much more profitable and stable ag community today if farmers owned their own land and the government subsidies to production and insurance were gone. I would bet there would be more of us also. | |
