The exhaust manifolds may be a direct swap, but the turbo's are different...
I really don't know much about the specifics of the 401 in that area, but from looking at the parts book, the early manifold/turbo are a single inlet/full flow type. The later manifold/turbo appear to be a twin inlet.
There are probably some rather subtle differences in the performance characteristics of those setups and I'd not want to mix and match, at least not without knowing what would happen as a result.
I have a gut feeling that there is differences in the valve timing and duration between those engines, but I'm not certain on that.
You might make yourself a heap of trouble by swapping the turbo's around...
Why not just pick up some pipe and elbows, preferably stainless and form the pipe into a transition, then use the elbow to get the right angle onto the manifold?
