North West IA/western AZ
I just attended a seminar on grain drying. John Gnadke was the speaker. He told us that if your bin roof is wet, your temp is too high! I thought holy --it, Ive been doing it wrong for 30 years. By the time he got done, he convinced me. His line of reasoning is that the fan can only move so much air, the air carries the water out. Excess heat only super saturates the air low in bin and as it rises, it cools enough to loose some of its moisture into the corn and the bin roof. This is why the top corn gets so wet, and why stirrators have to work so hard. The air doesn't move through the super wet corn either, actually slowing the process down.
He also said the vents in most bin roofs are in the wrong place. They should be 6' to 8' above the grain.
My typing finger is worn out, so I'll quit. Hope this helps.
