Little River, TX | Cy,
The leaf shatter effect is something I had not considered. I knew/know that the leaves on the outside of the bale are subject to more shattering. That was the reason I looked for a Custom RB operator with net wrap. Looked for a good number of years at that.
I assumed that with the less changing of direction a RB would loose fewer leaves as the hay was being stuffed in. With a square baler on a light windrow I can go up a few gears and still build a good even consist ant bale. (For short periods I have pushed it into road gear!) I know the windrow shape wants to be different for a RB compared to that for a square bale. To build a windrow for a RB I really need a different rake, but in 8 years I expect to retire, at 85.
The NH 254 rake tedder works reasonably well for my small square baling operation. For light hay I use a NH 57 PTO powered rake.
What does your humidity go down to during the day. Here it goes down to the 30% range.
