Subject: Second worst day of what has been a miserable harvest.

Hagen Brothers farms,Goodrich ND
First worst day was coming home from pea harvest and finding mother (97 years old with a heart condition) on the living room floor with a broken hip. She had been there for several hours, and we really felt bad that no one was there for her. She survived having an artificial hip put in and is healing well. Time lost taking care of mother and a near two week rain delay got us way behind on harvest. We were catching up with only 200 acres of flax and 400 of soybeans left when today the old 78 model 1480 suffered the fate that seemed to get most pre 2188 AF 80 series, it broke a front axle.
Lucky it was during a quick left turn, so the bottom of the wheel kicked out as the combine fell on it. Wrecked the ladder and side sheet metal, but unload auger mechanism is not damaged.

Anyone have experience with florescent dye crack detection ?
As you can see in the pictures, this thing has been cracking for a long time, and a fluorescent dye crack detector should spot this long before it fails. The things break well away from the final drive, actually breaking the axle out of the flange, so I believe they could be checked for cracking without disassembling the final drive. Just remove the wheel , clean the axle and use the crack detector dye and UV light.
