| Actually, those are REAL assets that can be sold. Yes, the unlock transfers to the new owner. Once the unit it unlocked, it is unlocked for a lifetime regardless of who owns it.
Look at it another way. When you are buying an EZ-Guide 500 WAAS, you are buying a physically fully-capable RTK unit (speaking of the EZ unit itself). This means if you want to sell the unit, you have a potential market of someone who may want to do Omni*, or someone who may want to do RTK. Therefore, the potential 'life' and 'market' of your EZ unit is greatly expanded.
Suppose there were a "WAAS-Only EZ-500" that could never be upgraded, a "Omni*-Only EZ-500" and an "RTK-Only EZ-500" What are your options then? Sell the old unit at a loss, buy a new unit when you need to upgrade? Sell your old WAAS unit to a WAAS-only market?
I, on the other hand, think it is a great benefit to us to have a releatively cheap "inaccurate" unit that has the potential of being a highly accurate unit. I look at this as a win-win situation for Trimble and for us, the farmer. We get a RTK-capable unit w/out having to spend the RTK price until we are ready--if ever. | |
