Cedar Rapids, Iowa | WAAS uses only the L1 frequency, and the base EZ Guide 500 comes with an antenna that only picks up L1.
OmniStar and RTK use both L1 and L2 frequencies, so you need the different antenna that is able to pick up both. The electronics inside are built to be able to understand both L1 and L2, but you have to pay to get access to them. The idea is that it is easier for you to do a software upgrade than to completely rip out what you have and buy a different product capable of Omnistar and RTK.
As for the extra $3K to go from Omnistar to RTK - the companies that build this stuff aren't non-profit organizations. I'm sure there are some changes in the code to be able to understand the RTK corrections instead of the Omnistar corrections, but it would be minimal. | |
