NW Tennessee

Richard,

I understand your thinking, especially looking at this year's DC beans. But, even though it's been 5 years or so since we raised any wheat, we used to make pretty good yields with our DC beans. This is the first year that I can remember in years where the wheat beans looked anywhere remotely as bad as they do this year. Up until this year, the big question to me was "How can people afford to raise $3.00 wheat?", the DC beans didn't seem to be the problem. I'm not looking forward to it, but with wheat prices like they are, we may sow some this fall.

Historically, most of the wheat/bean acres on rented ground around here have been crop share rent. I don't know of many landlord's that would want their ground laying out. Of course, with more cotton ground going to grains, I'm sure there are more cash rent wheat/bean acres than ever before. And, as some have said above, something will have to be done to keep the weeds down, might as well gamble on a bean crop to help shade them out.
