Welcome to NAT and the cattle business. Machinery talk gets the most traffic, but you are far less likely to get bashed on the livestock forum. I would start with bred cow calf pairs (3 in 1's). This will cost you the most to get into, but will be your quickest return on investment and also makes it easier to learn on. You will have a healthy, live calf to sell initially, and can calve out a proven cow, rather than trying to learn on heifers. I bet there are guys here that have 40 years in the business and still occasionally learn something new that a dumb heifer will do. I would try to find 3-5 year old cows and buy off a farm or herd dispersal of a reputable operator. Fall cows can be a little easier in my opinion as well, just given the calving conditions.
