Subject: Re: Best age to breed heifers?

west central Iowa
I can't calve on pasture any more because there is very little left in western Iowa. I have to get them big enough to haul to grass in Missouri by May 1. I do have on old farrowing house set up as a calving barn so I can calve the heifers early. Usually heifersneed a little extra attention ( pull one once in a while, one won't claim a calf etc.) so I like to be able to concentrate on them before the cows start. If you have any number of heifers very many years without trouble like this you are very lucky. I never have any touble getting my heifers big enough to breed at 14 months and calve at 23. Its kind of standard practice in my area to calve the heifers early.
